The previous sections introduced the mechanics of using computers and some detailed examples of computer applications; this section discusses in more general terms how computers are put to use in the real world, in science, industry, commerce, etc. An exhaustive list of computer applications is virtually impossible to draw up: computers are used where there is a lot of data to be manipulated, where complex tasks must be managed, or where there is a need for real-time access to centralized information from arbitrary locations. A few examples will be considered here.
